The Big Bash League is set for a significant shake-up next summer, with Cricket Australia weighing up two scenarios that will revamp the finals format.

Club insiders are privy to various scenarios that Cricket Australia (CA) hopes will maximise interest across late December, January and early February.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

A scheduling transformation stems from consistent feedback via players, broadcasters and clubs regarding the length and strength of BBL 08.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

CA is working closely with key stakeholders on the BBL 09 fixture, though a concrete release of the schedule is not expected until June.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Integral to the change of structure is a new and improved finals system, which foxsports.com.au understands has been whittled down to two scenarios.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Option 1: Top 4 with a double chance.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Under this alternative, the top placed team would play the second placed team in the first match of the finals series. It would take place seven days out from the Grand Final, giving the winner seven days to prepare for a home decider.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

The loser of 1 v 2 would play the winner of 3rd vs 4th. The victor in that encounter would then play in the Grand Final.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

This option would add one game to the season.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Option 2: The McIntyre final five system

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

As the name suggests, this system would give an extra club the chance to compete in finals. This finals make-up is favourable in the eyes of some BBL insiders because it will reduce the number of ‘dead rubbers’ towards the back end of the season.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Theoretically, if more clubs can play finals deeper into the season then interest will remain strong in games that otherwise would have had no impact on the top four.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

The McIntyre final five system was used in VFL/AFL football for two decades last century – plus the NRL – and sees the minor premiers granted automatic entry into a semi-final, while teams 2 to 5 play-off.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Teams ranked one, two and three are also granted double chances under this system, which would see finals extended to six matches. If this is introduced, the season would not be lengthened and the home and away fixture would have to be condensed. CA is working overtime to make sure the BBL is not any longer than it currently is.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“},{“contentType”:”IMAGE”,”link”:”https://cdn.newsapi.com.au/image/v1/acd42e8b5032abe3223ba5230f3ede78″,”title”:”Brisbane Heat would have made last year’s finals under McIntyre system.”,”originalSource”:”Getty Images”,”width”:1280,”height”:720},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

This year the final was on February 17, but next summer it’s believed CA is eager to bring it forward not just to shorten the total length of the season, but also so big games can take viewers away from the business end of the Australian Open.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

In BBL 08 the audience fell significantly during the second week of the Australian Open and key decision makers have been working hard to find a way to keep viewers engaged in this period.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

A reconfigured finals system is just one of several changes being weighed up by CA in conjunction with broadcasters and the eight BBL clubs.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

CA is acutely aware of the criticism emanating from BBL 08, which largely concerned the length of the tournament and the lack of star power.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

To address these issues, there are likely to be more double headers and even triple headers in the traditional holiday slot after the Sydney Test finishes.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

There will be five Tests next summer and none after the New Year’s Match.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Then later in January, it’s understood the Australia Day period will be inundated with matches more-so than ever, while double headers Thursday through to Sunday are a strong chance to come into play. If that occurs, a scenario that is being discussed will see no BBL cricket from Monday to Wednesday, which supporters of the concept hope will build anticipation more towards a jam-packed weekend schedule.

“},{“contentType”:”VIDEO”,”marbleApiEnv”:”prod”,”playerType”:”player”,”videoId”:725108},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Christmas Day BBL remains up in the air, although three sources familiar with discussions said it is more likely to be introduced next summer than the upcoming season.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

CA is aware the issue is a divisive one and has received a largely unenthusiastic response from key stakeholders in recent times. The Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) has not slammed the door on the possibility, but would prefer a derby to mitigate travel if it is to eventuate. There is a sense of unknown as to whether a Christmas Day clash would rate well on television.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Regardless of December 25 possibilities, Christmas Eve BBL is set for a return, with the Hobart Hurricanes set to host the Melbourne Renegades and not the Stars later this year. Although this is yet to be locked in.

“},{“contentType”:”IMAGE”,”link”:”https://cdn.newsapi.com.au/image/v1/43d1c3a391809d65b9e298be11da1816″,”title”:”The ACA does not believe adding another marquee player will be the silver bullet for the BBL. It’s understood their contention has been that adding AB De Villiers or Ben Stokes is not reliant on allowing three overseas players.”,”originalSource”:”AFP”,”width”:1280,”height”:720},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Broadly, the ACA and CA are working collaboratively on the fixture. The players union does not believe adding another marquee player will be the silver bullet for the BBL. It’s understood their contention has been that adding AB De Villiers or Ben Stokes is not reliant on allowing three overseas players.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Instead, the length of the season and scheduling as many meaningful matches as possible have been high on the radar in healthy and robust discussions between CA and the ACA.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Another point of discussion relating to the finals series has been the date of the BBL 09 final.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Given it is almost certain to be played on a Sunday, this leaves February 2, 9 and 16 as the dates available in that period.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

But a February 2 conclusion would clash with the 2020 Australian Open Men’s Final, which would be a monumental risk for CA. This leaves February 9 as the most plausible date for the decider, potentially even at a neutral venue.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“It’s one of the possibilities that we will consider (having BBL final at neutral ground). The merits of the higher placed team hosting the final, versus being able to plan for it. There’s a trade-off,” Cricket Australia chief executive Kevin Roberts said on SEN in February.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“You’ve got that passion of the home teams’ fans being in their home town, but that makes it really hard to plan for it. On the other side of the coin you’ve got a neutral venue that can be very well planned. So we’re going to throw that into the mix and consider both of those options as we go forward.”

A quickfire 48 by England’s Jonny Bairstow and disciplined bowling helped Sunrisers Hyderabad climb to the top of the Indian Premier League table after a five-wicket win over Delhi Capitals on Thursday.

Chasing a modest 130 for victory, Hyderabad depended on Bairstow’s 28-ball blitz to achieve the target with nine balls to spare in Delhi and register their third straight win in this edition of the Twenty20 tournament.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Bairstow, who is likely to open the batting for England at the World Cup, has been a revelation in his first IPL. He sits second on this year’s run-scoring charts (246 at 61.50, strike rate of 167.34) behind opening partner David Warner (264 at 88.00, strike rate of 161.96), who suffered his first blip of the season.

Having posted scores of 85, 69 and 100 not out in his past three IPL innings, the Australian was out for 10 against Kagiso Rabada in Delhi. He still helped Sunrisers get off to another brilliant start however, outting on a 64-run opening stand with Bairstow.

Bairstow, who was involved in a record 185-run opening stand with Warner in Sunday’s win, took the attack to the opposition with nine fours and one six before being trapped lbw off leg-spinner Rahul Tewatia.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“Jonny is obviously in red-hot form coming on the back of a hundred. When you are confident like that, you don’t think about the negative result,” Australian great and Delhi coach Ricky Ponting told reporters after his team’s third loss in five matches.

Left-handed Australian star Warner, who has also been in top form to boost his return from a ball-tampering scandal, looked out of sorts before falling to paceman Kagiso Rabada for 10 off 18 deliveries.

Cricket Australia 2019-20 women’s contract list, Georgia Wareham gets deal

Teenager Georgia Wareham’s rise has been recognised in the new Cricket Australia women’s contracted player list.

A star of Australia’s World T20 title success in the Windies, spinner Wareham was upgraded to the list last season and now gets her first full national contract.

The 14-player list for 2019-20 is most notable for the lack of change, reflecting the success of a team which is world No.1 ranked in T20 and ODI cricket.

Wareham comes in at the expense of fellow spinner Amanda-Jade Wellington who lost her spot in the side earlier in the season.

“Amanda-Jade is aware of what she needs to improve to put herself back in contention for selection and her first opportunity is through the National performance Squad program,” said national selector Shawn Flegler.

“Tayla Vlaeminck and Lauren Cheatle both played games for Australia last summer and, like all players in the domestic system, are eligible for an upgrade contract should they force their way into the Australian team over the coming season.

“Overall there has been minimal change in the CA contract list, which we believe is a good sign leading into a very important year with the Ashes and a home T20 World Cup.”
